Feedburner and Blog Feeds.

New Visitor? Like what you read? Then please subscribe to my Blog Feed or sign up for Free Email Updates. Thanks for Visiting!

Blog Feeds are a method by which viewers can view your blog and updated content without visiting your blog. Their importance is further enhanced by Google's frequent indexing of feed content........

To make sure that your blog content appears in the Search Engine results turn on your feeds. For this go to Settings------->Site Feed------>Select Short or Full Feeds and Save Settings.

Your blog feeds once turned on are accessed using their feed URLs. The URLs for your beta/new blog's feed is

http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/full
http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

Substitute actual blog name in place of yourblogname. For example the feeds for my blog can be accessed by clicking on :

Click on the above links to see the result. To view a blog's feeds in a Feed reader such as Bloglines or Google Reader simply add these URLs to it.

PUBLICIZE FEEDS

:To ensure that your viewers can easily subscribe to your blog content you have to put these URLs in a place easily seen on your blog. Blogger provides a link to them at the end of the posts. See What is Subscribe to Posts Atom.

Login to Feedburner and click on name of your blog. Then click on Publicize tab on top. Then click on Chicklet Chooser in sidebar. Choose the new standard feed icon by clicking its radio button. Scroll down and choose Use as a Widget in Blogger. Then click Go and follow instructions.

FEEDBURNER.COM

Feedburner.com provides a standard method of sending your feeds out. Your Blog feeds are taken by Feedburner and sent out. If you turn off your blog feeds then Feedburner will also give you error. To 'burn' your feed at feedburner goto feedburner.com and paste your blog URL into the text box provided and click on Next.

There is no actual burning involved. Feedburner takes blog feeds modifies them according to the settings you specify and passes them onto the readers. To make the actual connection with a blogfeed you have to first submit or burn it at feedburner. It is a once only process. Feedburner being separate from Blogger cannot connect with your feed unless you submit it to them. They prefer to call it burning in accordance with their name and probably to invest it with some portent!

Feedburner will show you what feeds are available (Atom and RSS) and ask you to choose one. Choose anyone and click on Next. Feedburner will give your feed a title and a new URL which you can copy and save for personal reference. Click on Activate Feed. The feed is now activated and you have to put the link for it in a prominent place on your site. Click on Skip directly to feed management beside the Next button at the bottom.

PUBLICIZE FEED

Buzzboost is the first option here. This takes your feed URL and turns it into Javascript code which you can embed into any other website you own which will then show the contents of your blog on that site. As an example I have added it to this Googlepages site : http://betabloggerfordummies.googlepages.com/bbd
This gives your content more exposure automatically.

Headline Animator is the second option. This displays rotating headlines from your blog. You can customize its appearance. See the left column of my blog where there is a seasonal Headline Animator. You can add this to the foot of your Emails also. Place this on another of your sites to promote your content.

FeedCount is another way to promote your feed. It is a dynamic graphic that always displays your feed's current circulation, as calculated by FeedBurner. Choose its color scheme and an animated or static appearance. This impresses your viewers into signing up for your feed.

Chicklet Chooser : These are small buttons which are the links for viewing your blog feed in any feed reader or application. You can choose the standard feed icon or any of the many chiclets. Paste the html code into a Html/Javascript Page Element in sidebar. This encourages people to subscribe to your feed by posting a friendly graphic in an easy-to-find location.

PingShot : This Notifies services when you publish. You can notify Technorati, My Yahoo, Bloglines, PubSub, Ping-o-matic, Newsgator and up to five additional services. Click on activate after choosing and then Save. Whenever you publish new content all these services are notified.

Email Subscriptions : Offers feed updates via email. Activate this and you will be given code to put in your site. Viewers can then type in their email address and click the Subscribe button. They will then receive in their email any updates to your blog.

Creative Commons : This service attaches the appropriate Creative Commons license in your feed's content. Choose the options you want and Activate and Save.

Password Protector : Basic security to keep an unwanted Tom, Dick, or Harry out of your feed. Protect your feed with a required username and password using HTTP
authentication. Any requests for your burned feed will require readers to enter a username and password to retrieve it.

OPTIMIZE FEED

Browser Friendly : makes your feed formatting easy to read in any browser. Choose among the options and Activate.

SmartFeed : Makes your feed compatible with any Reader application whether it is RSS or Atom.

FeedFlare : gives the viewer multiple options at the bottom of each post. See image below:

AUTODISCOVERY

It's a tag that tells web-based news readers and browsers like Firefox and IE7 what your exact feed address is. First View your blog in a browser and click on View----->Page Source. Locate these lines at the top :

<meta content='text/html; charset=UTF-8' http-equiv='Content-Type'/>
<meta content='true' name='MSSmartTagsPreventParsing'/>
<meta content='blogger' name='generator'/>
<link rel="alternate" type="application/atom+xml" title="test blog - Atom" href="http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="test blog - RSS" href="http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss" />
<link rel="service.post" type="application/atom+xml" title="test blog - Atom" href="http://www.blogger.com/feeds/875397467806229665/posts/default" />
<link rel="EditURI" type="application/rsd+xml" title="RSD" href="http://beta.blogger.com/rsd.g?blogID=87539746760806229665" />

Copy this code. Then goto Template----->Edit Html and locate this line :

<b:data='blog' name='all-head-content'>

Replace the above line with the source copied. Save Template.

Then in the same code replace these lines :

<link rel="alternate" type="application/atom+xml" title="test blog - Atom" href="http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="test blog - RSS" href="http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss" />

with this line :

<link rel="alternate" type="application/atom+xml" title="Your Blog Feed" href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/YOURBLOGFEEDNAME" />

where YOURBLOGFEEDNAME is the URI, of your FeedBurner feed. Save Template.

REDIRECT YOUR FEED

If your url is changed you may need to redirect your feed. Follow the instructions here.

THAT's the ticket.

Nice post, nice blog.

A bit on the "busy" side for my tastes, but very informative.

Thanks

I've been searching for a way to do this and your blog made it so easy! Thank you!!

Klaus Zeuge said...

This sounds easy - but what if the blogspot setting is Settings -> Permissions -> Who can view this blog? = only these readers;
i.e., it's NOT "Anybody".
With this setting, only logged in users can read the texts.
Is it still possible for these readers to subscribe to my blog?

klaus zeuge,

I don't think Blogger sends feeds out for private blogs. You can ask for this here :

my feed list ("on live bookmark") is not sort by latest posted. it's
sort by older post to newer post. so, I've see my latest post has list at the end (bottom) of live bookmark page. i tried to make
recent post in order for test, with same feed url, on my blog and
it's see as normally.

I'm use new/beta blogger, and has entering my feed url on feedburner
is: http://e-arena.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default/?max-results=10.

I can't find out how to fix its problem and hope anyone for help.!
please review my blog and compare with the live bookmark.

Blog url: http://e-arena.blogspot.com
feedburner url: http://feeds.feedburner.com/earena

I will follow the link and make a suggestion. It surprises me that this has been going on this long and no one has fix it to have this feature. I would have thought this to be common sense.
Oh well, Thanks for your time and help.

Dear Vin,

I managed to follow your guide and created a email subscribers box in my blog, and I also managed to receive and confirm my subscription using a test email account... but somehow when I update my blog, I receive nothing from feedburner for update reminder. I checked my feed, it's all activated in the email section and i saw my test email in the list. more importantly the site knows I updated as i can see the message somewhere in feedburner site. I can ping my blog too... please advise me.

Thanks a lot

Amy,

AlanaJ said...

Yes, I managed to follow quite a lot of it and did feeds to my blog. Being a novice everything's a bit... 'oh am I doing it right' but so far I've managed to do lots. I can't believe it but will I ever understand what I'm actually doing!!

Hi
I'm having great difficulties here and wondering if you can help me out. I've got 4 blogs running at the moment and I'd like for all the posts on them to show up on a single uber blog (and to continue to keep posting automatically as I put new posts up). The best I've managed so far is to get some lame side links of a few posts which redirect to the original blogs anyway. What I'd like is for the posts from the feeder blogs to feed directly into the main body of the uber blog. Any suggestions please? P.S. I owe you a beer.

lorenhops,

Hi Vin
I love how much help you have on your blog -thanks so much.

I must be really slow - I have tried to put a headline animator on from Feedburner. Ihave opened an account, but find their layout so difficult to understand what they want at times. I don't quite know how I got to the animator page, and can't seem to get back again. I go the animator on my blog, but it was too big even though I had asked for the small one, so the thing went off to the right.
ANy advice will be most welcome. I am so frustrated with myself.
Thank you in advance

Vin said...

Jessie,

Login at Feedburner.com. Click My Feeds link at the top of the page. Then click on your blog name. Go to Publicize tab and click Headline Animator in sidebar.

Put the code in your blog so we can see it to modify it.

Hi Vin
Somehow I managed to do it by following your instructions, and it came out correct this time. Appreciate your input here (Still don't know what I did?)

Sorry about the last post I just read not to put links in the messages.

Vin said...

Opé - Style Artist,

Do not put blog feed address in Post Feed Redirect box. You can put Feedburner feed address of blog there.

Hi there Vin,

Great post. I found you because of a search I was doing regarding a problem I have with my blogger blogs schmitzlblog.blogspot.com and muziekvragen.blogspot.com (custom domains www.schmitzl.nl and www.muziekvragen.nl respectively). It's an optimizing problem. I've burnt the feeds through feedburner but since I've done that, new posts come through in the rss readers hours after posting it. All seems to be in good working order, but it's very slow. I noticed that my orinal feeds (the one with "blogspot" in it) are coming through faster in readers like Bloglines.

One thing I noticed is when I experiment with reburning them, I get an error message. This happens when I enter my custom domain name and press enter in Feedburner. This should give an overview of the available feeds, but it doesn't. It gives an error message saying there's something wrong with the xml of the url given. Wouldn't know how to change this.

My question is: what is exactly causing this delay? Is it feedburner (been reading some complaints about that) or is it the way my site is built? Been messing quite a bit with the original Blogger template and besides that I'm using custom domains... Help is greatly appreciated.

Vin said...

Schmitzl,

Both your feeds are working correctly. Try setting the time emails are sent out in Publicize tab of Feedburner feed----->Email subscriptions in sidebar---->Delivery Options---->Schedule Email Delivery.

Then subscribe to your own feed (email). This may help in getting feeds out quickly.

Schmitzl said...

Hi Vin,

Thanks for your rapid reply. Good to hear the feeds are OK. I already set up the mail delivery time and I'm subscribed to them. Those are working correctly, i.e. mails arrive within minutes of the start of the delivery timeframe. It's the rss that keeps being late. They aren't related, or are they? If I post something at 9am, the post shows up in readers after 2 to 3 hours, which is too long. If I post something in my testblog (schmitzl.blogspot.com), that I haven't burnt through FB (and that's not connected through a CNAME to a custom domain), it shows up within half an hour, even faster than the original blogspot feeds of the two sites I mentioned earlier.

Do you have any idea what's causing the error I get when I enter the domain url (not the feed url) into FB? It gives an xml error message as described earlier. I used to get error messages on my FB feedbulletin in the past (not lately).

I'm asking a lot of questions :-) Again, any help is greatly appreciated.

Schmitzl

Vin said...

Schmitzl,

Obviously since the feed is customized there may be some delay. Check out Feed Medic on Troubleshootize Feed tab at Feedburner.

I don't know why you are entering domain url at Feedburner. Changing to Custom Domain does not mean you have to burn new feed.

Schmitzl said...

Thanks Vin,

I get no error messsages at Feedmedic, so I must assume everything is OK, just delayed. The reason for the domain in Feedburner is that I was testing my feedburner feed.

Thanks for your help and time.

Hallo, Vin

Can you explain a bit of the NoIndex under Publicize? Should we check it?

Angie's Recipes said...

About "BuzzBoost", I have even pinged the feedburner, but the items showed are still from weeks ago. Is it usual? I expected that the newest item would appear at first....

Thank you!

Vin said...

Angie's Recipes,

If you want your feeds to be private and not brought up in search results when people search for them then you can check Noindex.

Click Troubleshootize tab---->Feed Medic to see if there are any problems with the feed.

Angie's Recipes said...

Vin Thank you! The feed now is all clear. The list shows the older item on the top, is it possible to have the newest on the top instead ?

Angie's Recipes,

Recently there has been a problem with Feedburner which they are correcting but it will take some time.

Perhaps you can install one of these gadgets from My Gadget Showcase Blog.

They run on original Blogger feed. Let me know the number of the gadget you want so I can send you the code.

Hi, vin.

i've been using MS Outlook for my calendar of events. And just recently, I learned that I can view my blog feeds in MS Outlook by using the RSS feed feature. But is there a way to create a feed for my outlook entries and then publish them in my blog?

Thanks so much!

ERS said...

hi, vin.

i used the code in the page that you pointed me to. uhm... what part of it should i change so that it retrieves the calendar events in my MS outlook? the code generates events but they're not mine... sorry for asking again.

Vin said...

ERS,

Login to your calendar. Click drop down arrow next to calendar name in sidebar. Click Share this calendar in drop down menu.

Click Calendar Details tab at top of right pane. Scroll down and under Calendar Address right click orange XML button and selct Copy shortcut.

Paste in Notepad. It will look something like this :

http://www.google.com/calendar/feeds/YOUR_CALENDAR_NAME/public/basic

Change basic to Full in above and paste instead of this code in the AJAX Playground page :

http://www.google.com/calendar/feeds/developer-calendar%40google.com/public/full

Your calendar should be PUBLIC to enable the feed.
