Google Gadgets are mini-applications that work with the Google homepage, Google Desktop, or any page on the web. In the real world a gadget or gizmo is a device that has a useful specific purpose and function. Gadgets tend to be more unusual or cleverly designed than normal technology.

Google Gadgets range from simple HTML to complex applications, and can be a calendar, a weather globe, a media player, or anything else you can dream up.

A Widget on the other hand can be defined as the code representing a Page Element in the New Blogger.
You can add a Google Gadget to your blog to entertain your visitors or provide extra tools or functionality. Currently there are many Google Gadgets available in categories like News, Tools Communication, Fun & Games, Finance, Sports, Lifestyle and Technology. Do you want to provide a music player on your blog?

To do this go to : and type Music in the search box and hit Enter. You will get a list of Google Gadgets that provide a Jukebox, a Playlist Player, a MP3 Player etc. Click on Add to Webpage button at the bottom of the gadget you wish to add to your blog. Modify the dimensions of the gadget and customize it so it will fit in your webpage preview and click on Get Code. Code is generated which you copy and paste into a Html/Javascript Page Element in the sidebar. For example this is a MP3 Player (Click on image for bigger view)

Similarly you can provide other functions like a free file upload directly from your blog. Just add a Free file upload gadget in your sidebar. In my blog's right column at the bottom I have a picture uploading gadget. This will keep visitors on your blog for a longer time.

You can add Google Gadgets to your personalized search page as well as to your site at Googlepages and to your Desktop. If you wish to experiment you can make your own gadgets at After making your Gadget you can submit it to Google who will include it in their gadgets directory at so that it reaches millions of viewers.

Other examples of Gadgets you can add to your sidebar include weather reports, horoscopes, quote of the day, current temperature etc. Get them all at

I have been following ur tips on how to upload an mp3 via googlepages and wanted to add an mp3 gadget. Do I put all of the html codes into one box on my layout template or use seperate boxes for each code ie. one for the gadget, one for the link to the mp3 track on my googlepage and one to m3u notepad link? Sorry, I'm getting myself confused?!?!

Vin said...

There are two methods. You can either add a Google Gadget as in above post OR you can add MP3 as a streaming audio to blog.

Hi Vin,
I'm in the process of putting together a blog to promote my own music. Ideally, I would like some kind of MP3 player that would enable me to post four or more songs of my own. I'd prefer this to be via a jukebox/widget kind of thing that would sit in the sidebar, somewhere near the 'Profile' tag.
I'm not concerned as yet with making the songs downloadable for people, I just want them to be able to hear the songs for now.
Is this possible, and if so, do you have any recommendations?
Many thanks.

Hi Vin. I still have a question about uploading music to my blog. I want the music to actually show up inside a post, not on the side of my blog like the page elements makes it I have an imeem account and I've been trying the google gadgets you mentioned but none of them show up in the post, which I've seen in other people's blogs before. I have my songs uploaded onto a google group already. Any tips?

Have a look at Music in Blogger.

Hello Vin, I want that mp3 player to be present on my blog which will play any song by allowing the visitors to my blog to enter the url of that song. I want the player to accept any song url(direct linked of course) from my blog visitors and play that song. I will be more happy if the player can also allow the visitor to create a playlist by allowing him/her to enter many song urls. Is there any way, I can do this...? You know that the mp3 player that you showed in this post cannot accept song urls to play from my blog visitors. It plays only the one song whose url is inserted at the time of adding it to the blog. Please help.

Vin said...

A Telugu Guy,

First your visitors will have to upload their song to a free host to get the url of it.

Look for a gadget which plays songs by url.

To allow visitor to make playlist requires a more complex site like and is not possible in blogspot.
