How Custom Domains Work?

New Visitor? Like what you read? Then please subscribe to my Blog Feed or sign up for Free Email Updates. Thanks for Visiting!

Instead of using long blog addresses like "thestoryofmyschoolyearsinamerica.blogspot.com" you can use Custom Domains to redirect the above blog to somethng more Web 2.0ish like "www.sasn.com" (Short And Sweet Name). Now your visitors need only type 'sasn.com' to visit your site.

To use Custom Domains you need only two things :

1. Create a Blog on Blogger.com.

2. Buy a Domain Name from a Domain Registrar or from Google.

To know what domain names are see Blogger and Wordpress on Same Domain. Buying it from Google costs only 10$ per year (Payment by credit card only!) and comes with a lot of features like domain manager and Google Apps. Buying from other vendors will mean shelling out more for hosting charges (unnecessary since your blog is hosted at blogger) or for domain management. Let us see how Custom Domains work..................

EXTERNAL CUSTOM DOMAIN

To demonstrate this process I bought a domain name "vintip.com" and created a subdomain on it "seo.vintip.com". I requested my domain registrar Bluehost.com to change the CNAME record for 'seo.vintip.com' to point to 'ghs.google.com'. Now this is what happens when a viewer keys in http://www.seo.vintip.com in address bar of web browser :

1. The computer sends the request for seo.vintip.com to my Internet Service Provider (or ISP).

2. My ISP has a Domain Name System server (or DNS). The request is sent to the DNS which has a database of all IP numbers.

3. The CNAME record is looked up and it is directed to Google servers at ghs.google.com.

4. Google servers serve up my blogpage at http://seoblogadsense.blogspot.com. The address continues to show http://www.seo.vintip.com.

My blogspot blog (seoblogadsense.blogspot.com) has been redirected to the Custom domain (seo.vintip.com). You can check by clicking on this original seoblogadsense blogspot address. It will go to http://seo.vintip.com.

CUSTOM DOMAIN THROUGH GOOGLE

If you buy a domain name through Google :

Login at Blogger.com.
Click Settings link for your blog on Dashboard.
Click Publishing subtab of Settings tab.
Click Switch to Custom Domain.
Type in address and click 'Check availability' button.
Follow the prompts to buy the domain.
You can choose either Godaddy.com or enom.com to buy it through.

then Google autoconfigures your domain settings. Since Google Apps are involved you have to set the A name record as well as the CNAME records.

To set the CNAME record go to :

https://www.google.com/a/cpanel/YOUR_DOMAIN.COM/DomainSettingsAdvancedDns

Replace 'YOUR_DOMAIN.COM' with the domain name you bought. Sign into your DNS console with the login information provided on this page. When you access Advanced DNS settings, you'll be directed away from Google, and to the domain registration partner that registered your domain name. Create a CNAME record pointing YOUR_DOMAIN.COM to ghs.google.com. If you want a subdomain then first create it and then create a CNAME record for it pointing to ghs.google.com.

The CNAME record points your domain name to another hostname.

Set the A record of your domain as shown below :

mydomain.com. 3600 IN A 64.233.179.121
mydomain.com. 3600 IN A 66.249.81.121
mydomain.com. 3600 IN A 72.14.207.121

As you can see A records link a domain, or subdomain, to an IP address. Now let us see what happens here :

1. The computer sends the request for MYDOMAIN.com to your Internet Service Provider (or ISP).

2. Your ISP has a Domain Name System server (or DNS). The request is sent to the DNS which has a database of all IP numbers.

3. The CNAME record directs it to Google servers at ghs.google.com.

4. The A record direct it to Google Apps servers which serve up the blog page.

CHECK CNAME and A Record for DOMAIN

To check that the CNAME and A Record for your domain has been set correctly go to :

http://www.iptools.com/

Paste in your MYDOMAIN.COM in the "DNS Lookup" Tool to look up DNS record(s) (ex. A, MX, NS). Click the down arrow and select 'CNAME' or 'A' and click GO button. The correct response for CNAME should be :

;; QUESTION SECTION:
;MYDOMAIN.com. IN CNAME

;; ANSWER SECTION:
MYDOMAIN.com. 12654 IN CNAME ghs.google.com.

The correct response for A Record should be :

;; QUESTION SECTION:
;MYDOMAIN.com. IN A

;; ANSWER SECTION:
MYDOMAIN.com. 3600 IN A 72.14.207.121
MYDOMAIN.com. 3600 IN A 64.233.179.121
MYDOMAIN.com. 3600 IN A 66.249.81.121

"Another blog is already hosted at this address" error

If you see the above error you can get it repaired by going to the 'Magical Custom Domain Form' :

https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=pZHHZdeYKeHitQbvxkvwnCg&

Type in your custom domain (not your blogspot.com address)and click Submit.

Very interesting, Vin, but I have some doubts:

¿Is it possible to put several blogs in subdomains of the main domain and pay only one?
¿What happen with the internal links in an existing blog if you move to one domain or from one subdomain to another one of the same domain?

Vin said...

tomat,

Sure you can. I have one blogspot blog at :

http://seo.vintip.com/

one wordpress blog at :

http://www.vintip.com

and another wordpress blog at :

http://howblogger.vintip.com/blog/

and am planning several more (including one ftp blog)!

With Custom Domains your blogs continue to reside at Blogger, only their blogspot.com addresses are redirected to the subdomain you set them to.

So when a viewer types in your blogspot.com address in browser it is directed to your new subdomain : http://blog.MYDOMAIN.com.

You can have your three blogs on blogspot redirected to :

http://blog1.MYDOMAIN.com

http://blog2.MYDOMAIN.com

http://blog3.MYDOMAIN.com

The internal links are redirected to that subdomain which you set in Settings---->Publishing---->Advanced. If you change it the links are redirected to the changed setting.

Ok. Thanks. I'll try.

Hello vin,

This the first time that i will give a comment, i found your explanation much simpler than going to google group. Its been almost going on for 3 weeks that i could not put up my blog on my domain name. I tried to go on your site Dummies but i am having a problem loading it, but now your site is ok , but its a new site Blog Doctor. With your article, i will see if there will be problems, following your instructions regarding custom domain. I will report to you, thanks for article.

rodaflip said...

Your great i have already uploaded my blogsite with blogger using my custom domain. It took me almost three weeks to configure what to do and you just did it. I also did a lot of consultation with the google group, its a lot of thread discussions but they dont want to give the details, you have to do it yourself. But you with only two or three times consultation problem is solve. I also did some research about the DNS but because of technicalities its really hard to configure the settings But you help me with the information that i have to fill in the field of the registrars site. Your the man, i would still be consulting you which i have already done before. Again , thank you very much.

Would I violate Adsense if I register my blog to Pay Per Post?

Do I have to buy a domain in order for my account not be suspended by Adsense because of the Pay per post?

How would I expand the number of columns or layout in my template? Right now, i only have 2 columns.

Thank you so much your post is informative. I am new in blogging.

My blog address http://barex.blogspot.com

Vin said...

Marizylle,

You will have to check the Adsense TOS.

To increase number of columns see How to Add a Third Column in Three Steps?

BapaknyaAnak2 said...

Thanks Man !!! I have been searching for this for over a week and it works now. Only one comment, I did not thick the redirect mydomain.com to www.mydomain.com in blogger. Do you think it would be a problem in the future ? Anyway, so far it works for both with or without www and without the redirect mydomain.com to www.mydomain.com in blogger.

Vin said...

BapaknyaAnak2,

If you can provide the actual blogspot.com address and domain name we can test them.

Bapaknya Anak2 said...

Hi Vin,

My blog is daramaina.blogspot.com and domain that I bought from yahoo is daramaina.com

thanks

Vin said...

Bapaknya Anak2,

At present your DNS records are :

daramaina.com. 600 IN A 64.233.179.121
daramaina.com. 600 IN A 66.249.81.121
www.daramaina.com. 600 IN CNAME ghs.google.com.

CHANGE THEM TO :

daramaina.com. 3600 IN A 64.233.179.121
daramaina.com. 3600 IN A 72.14.207.121
www.daramaina.com. 3600 IN CNAME ghs.google.com.

Then after one hour go to Settings---->Publishing for your blog and click on "Switch to Blogspot.com" and save. Then republish to 'www.daramaina.com'.

BapaknyaAnak2 said...

Hi Vin,

How do I change 600 to 3600 ? as I could only see source (I filled it with daramaina.com) and destination (I typed 64.233.179.121) on my yahoo control panel.

Vin said...

BapaknyaAnak2,

You will have to consult Yahoo Support for this.

Hello, I'm having a similar problem to all the other commenters, but can't seem to fix it using said comments.

I have a blogspot blog at noisetanks.blogspot.com and I just bought the domain noisetanks.com from godaddy

I have successfully gotten www.noisetanks.com to be the main URL for the blog, but noisetanks.com still goes to the godaddy parked page.

I have the box checked that says redirect noisetanks.com to www.noisetanks.com and changed the A stuff to 72.14.207.121 and
64.233.179.121, the 3600 number seems to change every time I check it on iptools.com

Any idea how to get noisetanks.com to go to www.noisetanks.com instead of the godaddy parked page?
Thanks

Jebus said...

Disregard that last comment I suppose. Everything started working a few minutes after I posted. However now that the www less url works, it takes a good minute or so before it goes to www one, any idea how to fix that problem? Thanks

Vin said...

Jebus,

Submit it to the Magical Spreadsheet for a manual reset.

ok I am really stuck and there is a part i am not getting in your instructions. I bought my domain through blogger but when i log in my dns console i dont see where i have to change my cname. I have the namservers set to custom for my host. Where do i change the cname

Fashion Ivy said...

by the way my urls are fashionivy.blogspot.com wcjich i want to rededirect to skincareivy.com i have switched back to blogger since i was getting a server not found error with custom domain

Vin said...

Fashion Ivy,

Your settings are correct :

skincareivy.com. 14400 IN A 216.239.32.21
skincareivy.com. 14400 IN A 216.239.34.21
skincareivy.com. 14400 IN A 216.239.36.21
skincareivy.com. 14400 IN A 216.239.38.21

www.skincareivy.com. 12511 IN CNAME ghs.google.com.

Now login at Blogger.com and then click Settings link on Dashboard---->Publishing---->Custom Domains on same tab------>Click Advanced
Settings----->In Your Domain field type 'www.skincareivy.com' without
quotes and then the word verification correctly and save settings.

Fashion Ivy said...

have done that and switched to custom domain but its not coming up well. Its just showing my redirected url in the url bar at the top but everything else is my old blogger stuff not my new site. is it because the cname was changed about 3hrs ago?

Vin said...

Fashion Ivy,

You are publishing to skincareivy.com and not to www.skincareivy.com :

GET / HTTP/1.1
Host: fashionivy.blogspot.com
HTTP/1.1·301·Moved·Permanently(CR)(LF)
Location:·http://skincareivy.com/(CR)(LF)

Go to :

Settings----->Publishing---->Click Switch to Blogspot.com---->Type in
Word Verification correctly----->Save settings.

Check by clicking View Blog link at top. It should go to the
blogspot.com address.

Then click Custom Domains on same tab------>Click Advanced
Settings----->In Your Domain field type 'www.skincareivy.com' without
quotes and then the word verification correctly and save settings.

Fashion Ivy said...

Ok Vin. The blog is now at www.skincareivy.com but skincareivy.com is coming up with server not found 404 error. i tried ticking the redirect Redirect skincareivy.com to www.skincareivy.com and it stll doesnt work.

I am so grateful for your help and it seems i am mearly there now. what do i do to sort that?

Vin said...

Fashion Ivy,

The last step is to go to Settings--->Publishing and check the box to :

Redirect skincareivy.com to www.skincareivy.com

Type in word verification correctly and click Save settings. Ignore any error messages coming up directly under the redirection checkbox.

Fashion Ivy said...

I am getting a bit confused. I thought i would be using my own host on my custom domain as i prefered i wanted to have wordpress but that doesnt seem to the case. So with this method of custom redirection can i use my own host without loosing my backlinks. I tried that first and it was coming up with a You're about to be redirected. I would have loved to have a bit more control of the site. By the way everything is all working fine just the above it i have a question about.

Vin said...

Fashion Ivy,

You have the correct setup now :

GET / HTTP/1.1
Host: skincareivy.com
HTTP/1.1·302·Moved·Temporarily(CR)(LF)
Location:·http://www.skincareivy.com/(CR)(LF)

If you want to host externally you will have to use Classic Templates which do not have widgets. You will also have to pay for the hosting. Your URL will also change to something like http://www.skincareivy.com/blog

Fashion Ivy said...

Thanks Vin, I am happy for now at least i dont loose my backlinks. What i will do is get more and more backlinks to this my new domain and move to wordpress. i do have hosting already but its really my backlinks i didnt want to lose with the transfer

Vin said...

Fashion Ivy,

Have a look how one blogger moved to Wordpress.

You can also have Blogger and Wordpress on same Domain.

and delete the others.

I'm really bad at this. Here's my situation. I have a blogspot blog with www..etc...blogspot.com. I purchased a new domain, NOT through Blogger, but through Google. I want my new domain name: xyzxyz.com to go to my blogspot address. So far I can't figure it out. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Vin said...

Schlotz,

First login to your domain manager.

Then change the CNAME and A records.

Then go to Settings----->Publishing in your blog. Click Switch to blogspot.com and save.

Then click Custom Domains---->Advanced Settings---->In Your domain box type 'www.MYDOMAIN.com' and replace CAPS and save settings.

bcrvideo said...

I have a question. I recently made the change to a custom domain and realized that the address without the 'www' went to a Yahoo parking page. I read the above comments and am not quite sure what to do. I know that the A record must be modified but am unsure how to do this. Currently the only A Name record I have has domain without the 'www' but the destination reads Yahoo! Server. I appreciate any help.

Vin said...

bcrvideo,

What is the domain name and the blogspot address?

bcrvideo said...

Vin,

The domain name is http://www.wackyyoutube.com/

Blogspot address is http://wackyyoutubevideos.blogspot.com

Thanks!

Vin said...

You have to change A record from :

wackyyoutube.com. A IN 68.180.151.74

TO :

wackyyoutube.com. A IN 216.239.32.21
wackyyoutube.com. A IN 216.239.34.21
wackyyoutube.com. A IN 216.239.36.21
wackyyoutube.com. A IN 216.239.38.21

Then Login at Blogger.com and Go to :

Settings----->Publishing---->Click Switch to Blogspot.com---->Type in
Word Verification correctly----->Save settings.

Check by clicking View Blog link at top. It should go to the
blogspot.com address.

Then click Custom Domains on same tab------>Click Advanced
Settings----->In Your Domain field type 'www.wackyyoutube.com' without
quotes and then the word verification correctly and save settings.

Vin said...

Nayeem,

At present you are using Layouts template. In Custom Domains blog is hosted on Blogger servers. Hence you can continue to use same template. Only Blog address is redirected.

In FTP publishing you have to use Classic templates.
